A Lot Happens in Six Weeks!

Zach of Note

  • Still loving video games: FIFA, Dirt Five, and Rocket League
  • Playing with the neighborhood kids. They had an idyllic sprinkler/water gun fest with popsicles one Sunday
  • Zach the entrepreneur: lemonade stand
  • Zach and Athena are friends! From daycare to Lake Anne. I call them A to Z.
  • Spring soccer started and Zach went to pre-travel and rec league practices. He really enjoyed it! Going to pre-travel allowed me to meet Adrian’s family. At the end of pre-travel, he was invited to join the Travel Team for 2023-2024. After much family reflection, we signed him up!
  • Some spontaneous cleaning and commitment to chores
  • Half birthday!
  • The importance of “We can do hard things!”
  • Teaching Zach to tie his shoes and new shoes!
  • Zach’s yearbook!

Zach’s Health

  • Cough and allergies, especially a stuffy nose!
  • Home again one day after a nasty fall on the playground and a cut behind his ear

Sleep Update

  • It’s summer solstice time, and he’s up early.
  • He still likes to sleep with me as many nights as possible. We go with Fri and Sat, mostly.
  • Frank sits with him to fall asleep and he comes in to sleep with me during the night…

School

  • He enjoyed his after school clubs, Spanish Book/Reading Club and Lego Club
  • Chatty about things he’s learning: Asian Pacific Islander month, Arthur Ashe
  • A short field trip to the National Zoo; he took his group to see the seals and sea lions
  • Continued conversation about the incident on the bus with the 6th graders; I check in on Zach and make sure he knows that what the boys did was wrong, and we don’t want them to do it to him again or any other kids
  • Dolphin Dash and 1st grade tied with 6th as winners of the Penny Wars, so popsicles and ice cream party
  • Emailed Zach’s teachers, and I was not a fan of their responses. One was “Zach’s so sweet” (which is, of course, great, but not specific!) and the other was fairly critical. I am assuming positive intent from her and the takeaway is: Zach’s teacher has high expectations for him, and that’s good.  (Zach loves them both, BTW!)
  • Helping out with art and the art show
  • Blossoming authors poetry reading. Zach was very confident!

Emotions/Empathy Corner

  • We’ve forgotten a little bit about Thoughtful Thursdays
  • Zach helped with my eye drops when I had pink eye and pink eye and pink eye
  • He worked with Siga to replant my Mother’s Day plant, though it died almost immediately

Family Fun

  • Series: Just Add Magic - finished Mystery City; some MC Squared; and a new show Dive Club
  • The movie, Feel the Beat
  • Mother’s Day brunch at Thompson Italian and trip down to Sperryville (muffins, Hazel River Trail, and Copper Fox)
  • Art show at the school

Professional

  • Leadership Institute with Leaders Listen to Understand
  • Cross Cultural Communications research has been fun
  • Updated Belonging module
  • Accountability campaign
  • Trans Awareness workshop

  • I do not love searching for and implementing systems, like LMS; the process has been draining

What’s on my mind/Insights

  • Gratitude is working for me and going strong! I’m grateful that the power of emotion and passion helped me advocate for Zach
  • Still tracking daily: gratitude, discomfort (lean into it), something new/scary/out of the ordinary, laugh (this is so much harder than it should be) - fell off a bit on this, but have also leaned into it! For example, when Zach was learning to tie his shoes, I was very uncomfortable with his expressions of frustration. But he was really trying and kept at it, so I kept that discomfort in check. On Mother’s Day, the plans weren’t ideal. We had brunch at 10am and then plans to go to Sperryville. Frank asked about going to brunch earlier and expressed dislike for a late arrival in Sperryville. I thought about trying to make things better for him, but I leaned into the discomfort and just let it be.
  • I needed a reminder this month that when I feel out of control, I need to ask myself what I do have control over, and start there!
  • It’s okay to share hard things or share when things are hard; it normalizes those emotions and lets others know they are normal and they are not alone!
  • Reminded that I am highly sensitive. Keep it in mind and in perspective.
  • Remember to ask: is it true? Writing SFDs
  • People generally like you more than you think they do…
  • Nostalgia is powerful in friendships; Conflict in friendship is not bad; it shows you care enough to take a stand for whatever has hurt or angered you

From my last post, but so good:

  • Brene Brown and difference between anger (control) and frustration (no control)
  • Souleika Javed’s journaling in the form of letters; I haven’t done this, but I like the idea
  • Routine and schedule are medicine
  • Don’t forget body scans!

Quests for Baked Goods and More

Zach of Note

  • Still loving video games: FIFA, Dirt Five, and Rocket League
  • Playing with the neighborhood kids
  • Camps with Reston at Spring Break and the YMCA after school and for April days off; he always loves it!
  • Zach the entrepreneur: a detective agency with a sign, a massage business
  • Spring soccer started:
    • Zach asked me if I believed in God since kids were talking about that at soccer practice. So interesting!
    • A call out from the ED of GFR Soccer! They invited him to pre-travel practices!
  • Pink eye for Zach 🙁 Home from school another day, Th, before the day off for Eid. This in addition to Spring Break and two Fridays off in April. Sigh!
  • Another play date with Thomas; his mom was so generous handing out party favor’s from Thomas’ brother’s birthday party. Zach got a slice of cake, tops with lights, and Black Panther mask and snap bracelet!
  • He asked about having a sleepover with Thomas! Too soon!

School

  • He’s loving Spanish Book/Reading Club and Lego Club kicked off on Friday, April 28, which reignited his love for Lego play
  • General communication from school is SO FRUSTRATING; what Zach tells us is so hard to make sense of!
  • Quarterly Reports are frustrating (It’s really fine.); lack of communication with school is a challenge. I don’t feel particularly connected to the school or that anyone knows my kid, which is disappointing.
  • First field trip of the year to the National Zoo on May 4
  • Zach was coerced into saying a bad word by 6th graders on the bus. They recorded him saying the word, which they asked him to say and when he asked what it meant, they told him it meant “nice person.” I found my power in the emotion that came up as I pushed the school to address the situation. I’m still unpacking the event since the word is an in-group word that Zach should never use, and the kids who said the word and coerced him into saying the word would not appear to be allowed to use the word either. This seems much worse than simply using a “bad word.” And yet, I don’t have the sense that the situation is seen as a serious incident at the school. I worry about the video being out in the world. And video taping students is definitely against school rules.

Emotions/Empathy Corner

  • Kind to Callen at Spring Break camp

Zach's Words and Songs

  • Audio Books: Once Upon a Tim (IQ booster words and iconoclast), We’re Not from Here, Spy School at Sea, The Comeback
  • Reading by Zach: Diary of a Wimpy Kid (DWK), super hero book; Dogman; he took a book to Spring Break camp to read and read to me on the way down to C’ville
  • Reading to Zach: Francine Poulet Meets the Ghost Raccoon, DWK and back to Stuck in the Stone Age, some Magic Treehouse, and a throwback to Lulu and the Dog from the Sea
  • We downloaded a Kidz Bop Kids playlist for the drive to Charlottesville, and this has led to a lot of KBK listening. The faves: Party in the USA and Levitating
  • Also loving NKOTB and Cold Play. I particularly like My Universe
  • We watched The Magician’s Elephant

  • Date weekend while Zach was in Woodstock. We hiked at Great Falls and enjoyed Indian from Chaatwala

Fun and Not So Fun Stuff (Personal and Professional)

Health Corner

  • Anniversary of no invasive cancer was 3/31/23. Sort of took the day off, but didn’t have the support I’d hoped for. Shouldn’t need others’ affirmation, but still.
  • I asked for and got some terrific support messages from Paige, Mary Kay, and Nicole
  • Celebration dinner with Frank and Zach
  • Third and final Life with Cancer massage from Topaz = the best! She assessed my scar tissue!
  • Bought some clothes from a Chief Flattie and Boobless Thrifter at www.goingflat.com
  • Emily had her April cancer-palooza and had to have an emergency colonoscopy, which got me jump started to get mine scheduled, and that is always a huge pain and anxiety-inducing. I got help from neighbor, Mary, and it’s scheduled for Friday, July 7 at Fairfax Hospital. Wahoo!
  • Emily’s clear colonoscopy
  • Bit the bullet and bought train tickets to Hudson Valley, NY for the Flat Retreat there from July 27-30. I think this will replace my writing retreat this year!

Personal

  • Therapy continues and is helpful
  • Definitely been missing my regular check-ins with Paige; did have a phone dance party and helped with her career journey. More ChatGPT fun!
  • Moving into spring and longer days is tough. I like the quiet and slower pace of winter
  • Continued as an accountability partner with Nicole and Mary Kay
  • Frank’s food poisoning and hot weather have not been fun!
  • With the change in routine, no more Friday night date nights, anxiety around cancer-versary, Emily’s cancer-paloosa, pink eye for Zach, a couple of fun, but busy weekends and anxiety around colonoscopy scheduling, etc., resilience took a hit and I definitely felt like I had been hit by a ton of bricks around April 20-23
  • Remember a lot more dreams lately, and they’ve been strange!

What’s on my mind/Insights

  • Gratitude is working for me and going strong!
  • Still tracking daily: gratitude, discomfort (lean into it), something new/scary/out of the ordinary, laugh (this is so much harder than it should be)
  • Looking at this list and recognizing when something is really hard for me and leaning into that makes it more impactful
  • Frank mentioned reaching out to some friends that I’ve really (or sort of) lost touch with, so this is really on my mind. Lucy, Janna, Greer, Todd, Kathleen. Relationships ebb and flow and that’s okay. Don’t let the distance mean more than it does.
  • It’s okay to share hard things or share when things are hard; it normalizes those emotions and lets others know they are normal and they are not alone!
  • Brene Brown and difference between anger (control) and frustration (no control)
  • From Simon Sinek’s a Bit of Optimism: Don’t talk about my friend that way, and don’t cry alone, call someone!
  • Souleika Javed’s journaling in the form of letters; I haven’t done this, but I like the idea
  • Routine and schedule are medicine
  • Don’t forget body scans!

Forbidden fruit creates many jams.

This quote and the story behind it really made me laugh!
