Spring/Summer/Spring/Summer

Zach - Of Note
  • The pool with Auntie Em was a HUGE hit. Really hot very early in May, so it was super-crowded. WE gave Zach a thumbs up to jump in!
  • The pools in Charlottesville were also HUGE hits

  • The Water Mine - AMAZING
  • We're still walking to school and stopping by the pole park. Lately he wants me to wear a fireman's hat too. This month, he twirled as he slid down the pole; first time I'd seen that!
  • Zach is loving hiding the toilet paper. Before he gets on the potty, he'll hide it so we have to look for it when we come up to wipe. I know, gross story, but it's just so weird and funny.
  • Playing outside at the Zumba gym lately
    Pre-Haircut
  • I cut Zach's hair with the clippers, and he got a popsicle for doing such a good job. Madison said, “I like your haircut, Zach.”
    Post-haircut
  • Took Zach to Vanish. It was INSANE. Not really keen to go back any time soon.
  • One day, Sherry said, "Zach showed me everything he knows," I said, "What do you mean," She said, "Most of the time, he's not interested, but yesterday he took the class through the ABC's. 'This is the big J and this is the little j, etc.' He really knows his stuff!"
  • For his birthday, he would like pizza and oranges as a side dish, banana ice cream, and cake
  • We hang out with the flamingoes at Trader Joe's
  • He also says that Mommy and Daddy are his best friends, and then if we make him do something he doesn't want to do, he'll say, "You're not my best friend anymore." We try to explain that's not how that works, but....
  • Mom and Zach have a funny "speedy Magreety" bit
  • His music recital was fun, though not as impressive as dance!
Sleep Update
  • We're still staying with him until he falls asleep, and I sleep with him overnight. It's so sweet.
  • Lately, I've been reading in bed while he naps on the weekend, which has been awesome!
  • Zach said, “I love that you sleep with me,” or “Thank you for sleeping with me.” Aww...so polite.
Zach's Words & Songs
  • This month, I said to Zach, “What a great weekend,” and he said, “Good food too!”
  • Zach said one morning this month, “I know everything.”
  • "Thank you, Mommy, because that really hurt," in response to me fixing something on his car seat staps
  • Zach says, "My Daddy can fix anything."
  • Zach told Frank, "you need to listen to Mommy." I can't remember the context, but it made me laugh!
  • To Frank, Zach says, "I can go to the men's room with you!"
  • Zach is trying to say, “Ahem,” and he leaned a new word: "double check"
  • Zach said something really nice to me, that used the word “love,” like, “I love being with you,” but it was in reference to taking the time to let him put himself in his car seat. He does that all the time now!
  • He is loving Mommy Hugs, Goodnight Gorilla, and Press Here.
  • Zach has this new thing about “old ladies.” He says, pointing to things like trucks in his book, “you’re an old lady, and you’re an old lady,” etc. It’s weird. He says it in a weird voice, and he thinks it’s so funny. (It’s not.)
An Ideal Morning
This morning was almost ideal of what I think our weekends should be…at least for part of them. Zach woke me up at 6:15am. We read and lazed in bed until almost 7am. I went out for a run, and he watched too many shows, but that’s ok sometimes. When I got back, we all had breakfast. I cooked (oatmeal, mushrooms, carrots, prepped veggies - peppers) and Frank worked on the bed. Zach hung out and entertained himself reading, playing with toys, then he helped Frank put the bed together. At 9:30AM-ish, we got ready to go to the Water Mine. Ah, what can be done in 3 hours early on a Sunday!

Empathy Corner
  • Zach is so empathetic. When Jayla gets injured, he cries because she's crying. He says, "I'm sorry, Daddy. That was my fault." He listens intently when someone is expressing sadness and is super-expressive. Sherry said it too when we had our parent/teacher conference. She said he'll tell her when the other kids are upset. :) I'm so proud of him. Makes me think of Dar Williams' "When I Was a Boy."
  • Another example: Zach apologized for moving the vacuum cleaner (after Frank tripped over it) even though it wasn’t Zach’s fault that Frank tripped over it.
  • He also apologizes, “I’m sorry for not listening earlier, Mommy.”
  • Zach asked this morning about Marney. He said, “How’s she doing?”
  • And even though he's empathetic, he still does thinks like tell me he threw books at school and when Vanessa reprimanded him, he shut the door in her face, "ha, ha, ha." I had an ephiphany and now ask him, "How would that make you feel if someone slammed the door in your face?" And of course, we don't throw books.
Susan & Frank
  • Date night at Red's Table and Finn Thai, which had truly delicious spring rolls, fantastic Wild Tofu, and a great Chardonnay
  • Frank sprained his toe playing volleyball. Another injury! :(
Good Food
  • Amanda brought in cookies, and they were delicious
  • Territory foods continue to be quite tasty
  • Ethiopian for the first time in long time!
  • Ace biscuits and BBQ. I got a egg, pimento cheese, and fried green tomato biscuit!
  • Kombucha in Charlottesville
  • Asparagus, strawberries, raspberries, cherries, and garlic scape pesto
  • Middle Easter delights - a new vendor at the farmer's market
  • Lunch at Yvette's house: potato leek soup, cheese and bread, beautiful salads
  • Dinner at Avec with Adrienne. Fresh pasta and pizza did not disappoint!

Visits with
  • Grandad and food from CAVA
  • Sam, Julia, and Zahra and Ralph and Chuckie. I called the Bold Rock Race Day a perfect evening. Exercise; Zach had fun with Zahra; we all had yummy food and drink on top of the mtn with a great view. The next day, Zach and I explored around. We went to the coffee house and Ace biscuits. Fun!
  • Family Memorial Day dinner. Emily hosted and made an incredible strawberry tart.
  • Great dinner with Aliana, Nathan and family. Zach loved Esher's Monster Truck Cozy Coup
  • Kathleen - by phone
  • Auntie Em at Lake Anne Brew House - we were supposed to sing show tunes for Pride weekend and Mod Pizza the next Friday

  • Raubia :( She is ghosting us all: SCORE, Katie, and me :( (Shared my concern with my team, and one person made it about her, saying "That kind of situation was really good for me; I learned a lot from it." Okay. My other colleague wanted to come up with lessons learned for GC. No, folks, no!
  • Enjoyed The Bodyguard on Netflix; Enjoying Hanna
  • Loved Station Eleven
